Dave and I have been hiding away here in Manitoba for most of the summer and we have been enjoying our time off. We have spent much time at the cabin with the bears, eagles and turtles as well as in the canoe. But to be perfectly honest we are getting the itch to be back on the road and back on stage. We have lots of shows booked well into November, as well as new gear and new songs to share with all of you.
As most of you know we spent 6 days with Colin Linden and a host of fine musicians back in late May at the Rendering Plant/Pinhead Recorders in Nashville, TN recording our new album. The first 3 days consisted of Dave and I laying down our tracks with the late Richard Bell on piano/organ/wurlitzer and Gary Craig on the drums. We were also lucky enough to have Engineer extraordinaire John Whynot on the board and the jokes for those days as well. The following 3 days we had Dave Roe and Bryan Owings and Colin laying down overdubs. Our approach was simple, play through the tunes 1-3 times altogether in the same room and have a good time doing so. Also, use great old mics and old tube guitar amps to warm everything up. We were well fed by Brian “Brain” Harrison who was cooking, well actually smokin’ up the finest pork in the green egg all week.
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Richard Bell on June 15. We are extremely honored to have had the chance to work him; his talents lent grace and poise to our songs. Thanks so much Richard, your music will live on!
It has been a great summer and I am a little sad to see the days getting shorter once again. That’s life for you, always changing, ever evolving. We have one more weekend in the great outdoors before we head off on the road. Dave and I will be going on a short little canoe trip for our 5 -year anniversary. We will recharge to wide open skies and wolves howling at night.
