Washington, DC

We came upon U St. after a maze of streets and avenues lettered like
alphabet soup
Left off of 14th-
Right next to the boarded up cafe America’s Bounty, closed for business,
and across from the tattoo parlor that resembled a pumpkin.

The bar smelled as if someone had died and possibly so as a piece
of your soul would waste away every hour you spend with a drink in your hand.

And a peculiar smell it was
a mixture of
Mr.Clean
Teenage Sweat
and old cracked leather boots

The lincoln theatre was down the street and the Bohemian Cavern on the corner
Nick Cave wails at the 930
while we sing of loneliness and wonder

Always 50 years to late
