Penguin Eggs Review April 2011
Twilight Hotel have nailed the art of the duet. Their sensual vocal play, dark lyrical imagery and ability to enchant are obvious from the first note. The musical partnership of Brandy Zdan and Dave Quanbury is a matrimony of melancholy and muses.
Where the Wolves Go Blind rhythmically cascades a spell of curiosity; it swells with longing and sexuality. What Do I Know About Love? toys with accordion and twanging guitar, though it’s Zdan’s breathy vocals and bold brooding that conjures up the cooking fires. Twilight Hotel’s cinematic hypnotism seduces listeners in the dark caverns of the bar, swirling their drinks and playing footsie under the table.
They’re a power duo: with tracks like The Master, The Darkness, and Golden Eagle they’re unstoppable. Their album closes with the ethereal When I’m Gone, an ode to loss, longing and loneliness. Twilight Hotel certainly deserve making the reservation to stay the second night.
