4 STARS Based in Austin but originally from Winnipeg, Brandy Zdan and Dave Quanbury are the two people behind Twilight Hotel. The pair wrote most of this album while on the road promoting their rootsy 2008 release Highway Prayer. To record it, they enlisted the help of Stephen Hodges and John Whynot, who have worked with Tom Waits and Lucinda Williams respectively, along with multi-instrumentalist Jeff Turmes. Twilight Hotel picked up Juno and Western Canadian Music Award nominations for Highway Prayer and Zdan and Quanbury don’t break too much new ground with Wolves. Vividly poetic songwriting, ethereal instrumentation and sparse yet evocative vocals infuse this album with a haunting aura that anyone inclined to moments of moody, honest self-reflection will find compelling. -Gregory Beatty
